Just 50km from Malaga, the small, Andalucian coastal town of NERJA marks the eastern end of the Costa del Sol, famous for its beautiful beaches of fine sand, sparkling sea and warm, year-round climate. Flanked by the dramatic mountains of the SIERRA AMLIJARA, the town has resisted the concrete high-rise scenario of some resorts and retains a charming, traditional atmosphere.
NERJA'S old quarter is virtually unchanged, its narrow streets flanked by whitewashed houses, their wrought iron terraces and balconies profuse with colourful gernaiums. The winding alleyways are full of shops, cafes, tapas bars and a huge choice of restaurants offering regional and international menus. The nearest is just three minutes walk from the Parador de Nerja.
In the heart of Nerja is the magnificent 'BALCON DE EUROPA', a spectacular tree-lined promenade jutting out into the sea, with sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the small coves and beaches below.
Nestling in the hills 6km from Nerja is the pretty hill village of FRIGILIANA with its Moorish architecture, white-washed houses, colourful flowers, narrow cobbled streets, wines, pottery and cafes.
Close to Nerja, and well worth a visit, are a series of spectacular caves stretching for about 5km underground with fabulous stalactite formations (the largest ever discovered is to be found here and is an amazing 32 metres long). This stunning geological wonder is one of Spain's major tourist attractions with thousands of visitors every year.
ANDALUCIA has a wealth of interesting places to visit, and throughout the year excursions are available to GRANADA in its magnificent setting backed by the peaks of the SIERRA NEVADA and the famous ALHAMBRA; spectacular RONDA and its deep gorge; CORDOBA with its old quarter, narrow streets and great mosque; and GIBRALTAR,all of which are within 2-3 hours drive.
Another lovely excursion going towards Granada is into the hills of LA ALPUJARRAS, just below the Sierra Nevada, where the scenery is spectacular around the hill villages of PAMPANEIRA, BUBION and CAPILEIRA.
