SARDINIA is a large island, but still sparsely populated giving plenty of space for exploring what must be one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean.
The coastline is famous for its uncrowded white sand beaches and coves with crystal-clear water where the swimming and snorkelling are superb. There are many small islands off the north, east and south coasts, some of which can be visited by boat.
The spring flowers are magnificent and a drive through the countryside with its maquis, myrtle, cork oaks, juniper, rock roses and scented shrubs is a peaceful and fragrant experience. The small villages still continue their crafts and traditions – basketry, textiles, ceramics, wood-carving, cheese making, fishing, wine and cork items. In other areas you will find more rugged scenery – huge granite rocks sculpted into a multitude of shapes by the wind, or steep cliffs falling to the beaches below.
The whole island has been described as ‘the largest open-air museum in the Mediterranean’ and it is certainly steeped in history and legends with its many dolmens, fairies’ houses, giants’ tombs and nuraghi – mysterious squat circular towers, found only in Sardinia and said to date back to 1600 BC.
In the restaurants you will find good local wines and Sardinian dishes: pastas, cheeses, seafood, wild boar and suckling pig, with ‘carasau’ or ‘guttiau’ (their delicious thin crisp bread) and many traditional desserts including, of course the famous Italian ice cream.
This is an independent holiday during which you can combine relaxing with exploring around the island. Our local Representative will arrange your airport transfers (minibus/coach, approximately 20 minutes), and visit you at your hotel to assist with any arrangements you wish to make.
