Our tour to the heart of TUSCANY is based in the stunning medieval city of Florence and includes visits to Pisa, Lucca, Siena, Bologna and San Gimignano plus tickets for a performance of Puccini's 'Turandot'.

Hosting priceless collections of fine art, sculpture and magnificent architecture, FLORENCE holds many of the world’s greatest treasures. There is a vast amount to see here including the Accademia that houses Michelangelo’s ‘David’ and the Uffizi and Bargello Museums. The famous Duomo, dominates the city’s skyline and the Pitti Palace with its lovely Boboli Gardens is not to be missed. Piazza Michelangelo commands classic views of the city across the river and the quaint Ponte Vecchio is lined with tiny craft shops.

A NIGHT AT THE OPERA
The atmospheric lakeside setting at Torre del Lago, adjacent to Puccini’s villa, is a wonderful place to enjoy one of his perennial classics, 'Turandot'.

At the heart of SIENA is one of the world’s greatest squares, the Campo, lined with shops and restaurants on one semi-circular side and the magnificent 14th Century Palazzo Publicco town hall on the other. Other highlights include the exuberant Duomo with striped black and white marble pillars, Fonte Gaia, Loggia del Mercanzia arcade dating from 1418 and the famous bell-tower, Torre del Mangia built in 1348 whose 505 steps lead to a wonderful view of the city and countryside.

Thirteen towers dominate SAN GIMIGNANO’S majestic skyline (there were originally 72), built by rival noble families during 12th and 13th Centuries when its position on the pilgrimage route to Rome brought it great prosperity. The town has retained its medieval atmosphere and there are several charming squares including the Piazza del Duomo and Cisterna and the Civic Museum that provides access to the tallest of the remaining towers.

There is much more to PISA than its famous leaning tower (dating from 1173 and tilting ever since). City highlights include the Campo dei Miracoli (field of miracles) complex of medieval buildings, comprising the tower, the magnificent Duomo and Baptistry and the Camposanto (holy field) cemetry. Other sights include the church of Santa Maria della Spina and National Museum.

LUCCA’s interesting grid of streets surrounded by ramparts make it a pleasant city to explore on foot. Highlights include the churches of San Michele in Foro, San Martino and San Frediano, Puccini’s birthplace and the attractive Via Filungo.
