the FULL itinerary
The Dordogne region in France with its beautiful river and soft landscapes has a special place in many peoples’ hearts. The base for our tour is the attractive town of MONTIGNAC.
The beautiful town of SARLAT-LA-CANEDA boasts a wealth of medieval, Renaissance and 17th Century buildings almost without equal in the whole of France. A real attraction is to wander the immaculate streets at leisure and take in the sights of the Cathedral St. Sacerdos, Chappelle des Penitents Bleus and Bishop’s palace.
An important centre of pilgrimage after the discovery in 1166 of an ancient cave containing the un-decayed body of St. Amadour, the spectacular situation of Rocamador on a rock above the Alzou Valley, commanding wonderful views, ensures its continuing popularity with visitors.
The Dordogne area boasts a wealth of prehistoric sites once occupied by our distant ancestors. The most famous site of all is at Lascaux (now closed), where the famous caves contain many paintings and images recorded by ancient man. These paintings are beautifully replicated at Lascaux II.
BEYNAC’S 14th Century fortress towers above a village that clings to a sheer cliff overlooking a beautiful stretch of the Dordogne. A lovely day exploring the Dordogne also takes in the gorgeous riverside village of La-Roque-Gageac and the beautiful medieval fortified town of DOMME. The lively and attractive town of BERGERAC is a delightful place to explore with excellent shops, and restaurants. Nearby is Chateau Monbazillac famous for the dessert wine of the same name.
Market day is particularly lively in the ancient gastronomic city of PERIGEUEUX. Stalls in the medieval centre offer regional specialities such as truffles, charcutierie and succulent pies called ‘pates de Perigord’.
Famed for its porcelain, LIMOGES is a lively city with an attractive old town. Sights here include an excellent museum devoted to its local ware and the 16th Centruy Cathedral of St Etienne and Chateau.
