Surrounded by the Black Mountains, the Corbières and the Pyrenees, Carcassonne is one of the most complete medieval fortresses in existence today. With 52 towers and nearly two miles of ramparts, it is a stunning sight and here you are ideally placed to explore the very beautiful Languedoc region of France.

the FULL itinerary
The extraordinarily diverse scenery is lovely and in May the wild flowers are like carpets, whilst autumn brings colourful changes in the deciduous forests. You will see rugged mountains topped by castles and fortifications, unspoilt old villages with pretty houses and narrow cobbled streets, innumerable vineyards, dramatic gorges and bubbling rivers, vast forests and wild scrubland known as ‘garrigue’.
Whilst here tours will include a walk through the old city of CARCASSONNE followed by a wine tasting. Then lunch, and the opportunity to try the regional speciality, cassoulet. There will be a visit to ALBI, the birthplace of Henri Toulouse-Lautrec to see his museum and the imposing cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace Garden. A day in the MINERVOIS includes the dramatic castle of LASTOURS, the spectacular village of MINERVE and a cruise on the historic Canal du Midi. There will also be a tour into the CORBIÈRES, heart of Cathar country and the magnificent city of TOULOUSE with its maze of narrow streets and many fine buildings in soft, red bricks, that give Toulouse its affectionate name, ‘Red City’.
An experienced English-speaking guide will meet you on arrival and be with you for all tours. Transport is in a comfortable air-conditioned coach or minibus. Although luggage is transported from the city walls to the hotel, guests must disembark from the coach at the Narbonne Gate and walk approximately 300 metres across the moat bridge into the city and upwards to the hotel. We regret no alternative arrangement can be made and although the streets are not very steep, they are cobbled and uneven in places.
