Known as the ‘Jewel of the Adriatic’, DUBROVNIK is an enchanting, beautiful city dating back to the 13th Century and remaining virtually unchanged to the present day. Tall ramparts enclose the city and there are only two entrances to the ‘old town’ which lead to the ‘Stradun’ the city’s promenade.
One of the greatest pleasures is to sit and have a drink at one of the many nearby cafés and simply watch the world go by. The Rector’s Palace, built in 1441, is now a city museum and just opposite through a narrow street is the site of the morning market. From here you can head for the little old town port and visit the city walls, built between the 13th and 16th Centuries, which encircle the city and have been remarkably preserved.
We have chosen a hotel close by with one of the best views of the ‘Old City’.
Situated on the water’s edge, a short distance from Dubrovnik’s PLOCE GATE, with stunning sea and city views, this is an excellent base for our tour of Dubrovnik.
You will stay at the Grand Villa Argentina for seven nights in sea facing rooms with buffet breakfast daily and three table d’hôte dinners included. This is a very comfortable hotel with good facilities including a heated indoor swimming pool, fitness room, jacuzzi, sauna, hair and beauty salon, two restaurants, bars, delightful terraced gardens and an outdoor pool (not always open, as dependent on weather). You can also enjoy sea swimming from the pool terrace. The rooms have air-conditioning/heating, balcony, TV, telephone, safe and private bathrooms with bath/shower, basin, wc, hairdyer and bathrobes.
Our tour gives you the opportunity to discover more of this beautiful area, but also allows you time to explore on your own, or simply relax in the comfort of your hotel and soak up the view as boats come and go into Dubrovnik’s busy harbour. Included in the tour is a half-day walk through the old city of Dubrovnik with lunch included. Later you may like to browse among the many shops and galleries, or take a boat trip from the bustling harbour.
A full day tour to MOSTAR in Bosnia Herzegovina and another to neighbouring MONTENEGRO will give you the opportunity to see much more of this lovely area with its atmospheric towns and villages.
Famed for its white marble bridge which was commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent about 500 years ago, the city of Mostar and its bridge suffered terrible destruction in the 1990’s conflict. The beautiful single-arch stone bridge with its famous towers, has been exquisitely restored, along with the city which is now a major tourist draw. Crossing the ‘Stari Most’ (old bridge) is an exciting experience.
Exploring the beautiful clear waters of the Adriatic and the ELAFITI ISLANDS by boat, with lunch on board, is another lovely day out and weather permitting a chance to swim from the boat. ELAFITI is an archipelago of 13 islands in the Adriatic Sea, just west of Dubrovnik, but only three are inhabited, Kolocep, Lopud and Sipan. The islands are well-linked by boat to Dubrovnik, with several ferries each way every day. There are beautiful sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, lovely scenery and on Kolocep, sub-tropical vegetation, pinewoods and olive groves.
Just 40 minutes by boat from Dubrovnik, the picturesque island of Lopud has all the lush, scenic charm of Croatia’s other islands, but with the advantage of being traffic-free. One of the seven Elafiti islands, Lopud has many footpaths and is a particular joy for walkers and there are two fine sandy beaches.
You will travel in an air-conditioned coach, and will be accompanied on tours by an experienced English-speaking guidexplore independently.
