Since 1995 Croatians have been at peace and working ceaselessly to rebuild and restore their spectacular country. Everyone remembers the devastation in DUBROVNIK and wondering if it would ever be possible again to walk the medieval paved streets and 2 kilometer long city walls. With the help of experts from all over the world, the old city of Dubrovnik has been superbly repaired and reconstructed, and is now full of life and a joy to visit.
Just 40 minutes by boat from Dubrovnik, the picturesque island of LOPUD has all the lush, scenic charm of Croatia’s other islands, but with the added advantage of being traffic-free and of having sandy beaches. One of the seven ELAFITI ISLANDS, Lopud has many footpaths and is a particular joy for walkers.
The only village is also called Lopud. There is a little harbour, local shops, several restaurants, a post office and a small tourist office where you can buy tickets for the ferry to DUBROVNIK and to the nearby islands of SIPAN and KOLOCEP.
The island has two gently shelving sandy beaches, one in the village just 2 or 3 minutes walk from the hotel and a larger one on the other side of the island, which is about a 30 minute walk.
At the western end of LOPUD BAY, next to the church and overlooking the harbour, stands the family-owned Villa Vilina. This gracious stone manor house is a protected building and was built by the Vilina family in 1792.
There are many places to discover along this beautiful coastline including three of the ELAFITI ISLANDS – LOPUD, SIPAN AND KOLOCEP – as well as stunning KORCULA ISLAND, pretty LOKRUM with its Botanical Gardens and also MLJET, the western half of which is a National Park. Getting to know Croatia’s neighbours is another excellent reason for visiting this area. Historic MOSTAR in BOSNIA HERZEGOVINA is fascinating with its oriental architecture and restored bridge, and the small country of MONTENEGRO is only a short distance south of Dubrovnik and yet has a totally different atmosphere.
Exploring by boat is the ideal way to appreciate the stunning scenery and sparkling clean sea.. Two boat trips are included in the holiday price and optional boat trips to such places as KORCULA and MLJET are also available. Island hopping using the ferries is a delightful way to explore and there are lovely walks on the other islands as well. Dubrovnik can easily be visited by ferry and from the harbour of the Old City there are boat trips to the island of LOKRUM and to CAVTAT.
There is so much to do and see from Lopud and, as the ferry bringing you back to the island sails into the bay, we experienced a satisfying feeling of coming home.
