BARBADOS lies in the southern Caribbean region, 160km east of the Windward Islands, its terrain being mainly flat, rising to low gentle hills in the interior. Most of the island is fringed by coral reefs and the west coast has pure white-sand beaches and calm turquoise waters in contrast to the wilder Atlantic seas and coastal cliffs on the east side.

Barbados is a limestone coral island and within its coral core there are vast caves and underground lakes which provide an excellent supply of drinking water that is reputed to be amongst the purest in the world. The climate is sub-tropical, but the influence of trade winds from the Atlantic, keep temperatures mild. Tropical woodland and scrub contrast with large sugar-cane estates and wide gently-sloping pastures with many lovely views to the coast.

Barbados has an enviable reputation for good food and the concierge will be pleased to recommend some local restaurants you may like to try, within walking distance of the hotel. There is also a great deal to see on the island, including some wonderful excursions. Adventure Safaris traverse the superb countryside in huge 4WD vehicles. Excellent drivers and friendly, knowledgeable guides can show you sights you might not easily discover yourself.

From a submarine the underwater magic of the fantastic coral reefs and marine life is revealed, or you may like to view Barbados from the air on a helicopter trip. At Grantley Adams Airport there is the renowned Concorde exhibition.

Catamaran sailing where you can swim with the local turtles is another option and there are many tours around Barbados exploring the culture and beauty of this exceptional island. Picnics, time for a swim and even a visit to one of the oldest Plantation Houses in Barbados are features of the many local tours available. Transport is good, with 'route taxis', (pronounced 'Zed Rs') travelling to most points on the island. These small buses can at times be overcrowded, but they usually take the more scenic routes to destinations. They generally depart from the capital, Bridgetown, or Speightstown.

Barbados is well known for its excellent shopping and there is plenty to see including fine clothes and jewellery.
