The volcanic archipelago of the seven Aeolian Islands off the coast of Sicily enjoy a pace and way of life little altered for decades, with a history stretching back to Neolithic times. Preserving the islands in a natural state is encouraged and indigenous materials are used in new buildings and restoration work, presenting a timeless feel and a peaceful ambience. By contrast, rugged scenery, deep caverns, steep cliffs and spewing volcanoes are evidence of a turbulent natural history.
