GRAN CANARIA has an interior of high mountains with rugged outcrops, deep valleys and spectacular views. Canary palms grow up to 1000 metres above sea level and higher than this are thick forests of fire-resistant Canarian pines with their long needles.
On the west coast you will find small fishing villages with pretty harbours and superb coastal scenery, whilst the north is greener and ideal for the many banana plantations and huge areas of tomatoes and vegetables which are grown under cover.
LAS PALMAS, in the north east is well worth a visit and there is a large beach
shopping areas, busy port and the old city with its cathedral and narrow Spanish streets and squares.
The capital with its original and individual architecture and colourfully painted houses shows influences of all five continents. The ambience here is lively and there are many sights to see including the Gothic and neo-classical style cathedral, La Casa de Colon (the house of Columbus) and a number of interesting museums.
There are also very attractive gardens at Doramas Park where colourful folklore performances take place.
The countryside around Las Palmas is a mixture of agricultural land, beautiful, unspoilt countryside, coastal and mountain views.
The south coast from Puerto del Ingles to Puerto Rico is very commercialised.
