Golden sands, spectacular rock formations, azure sea, whitewashed village houses splashed with scarlet bougainvillaea, barbecued sardines by the harbour wall - all typify our perception of the Algarve.
The ALGARVE is on Portugal’s southern Atlantic coast and is renowned for its spectacular coastal scenery and magnificent beaches. Along this rich fishing coast, towns and villages all offer a large selection of fresh fish and shellfish cooked in a variety of traditional ways. The local copper ‘cataplana’ produces a delicious dish of steamed shellfish and the fresh sardines are exceptionally good.
There is a wide range of good Portuguese wines to compliment any menu, and of course, port. The wild flowers are at their best in spring when almond, orange and lemon groves burst into blossom and in the autumn the sea is still warm and the olives are being harvested. Mild winters and warm summers, normally totalling over 3,000 hours of sunshine each year, make this a wonderful place to visit.
The Algarve is on the main route of birds migrating south from Europe and even from the Arctic Circle, so ornithologists can see about 200 different species come and go during the year.
For an interesting day out and to sample the very best and freshest sardines, drive to the quayside in Portimao, about 20 minutes from Carvoeiro, where you will find half a dozen restaurants lining the harbour wall. The fish are taken straight from the sea and grilled before your eyes, the smell of barbecued fish tempting you to sample this little piece of culture in true Portuguese style.
