The ALGARVE is on Portugal’s southern Atlantic coast and is renowned for its spectacular coastal scenery and magnificent beaches. Along this rich fishing coast, towns and villages all offer a large selection of fresh fish and shellfish cooked in a variety of traditional ways. The local copper ‘cataplana’ produces a delicious dish of steamed shellfish and the fresh sardines are exceptionally good. There is a wide range of good Portuguese wines to compliment any menu, and of course, port.
The wild flowers are at their best in spring when almond, orange and lemon groves burst into blossom. The Algarve is on the main route of birds migrating south from Europe and even from the Arctic Circle, so ornithologists can see about 200 different species come and go during the year.
Golfers have a wide choice of first class courses to choose from.
