BARCELONA, second largest city in Spain and capital of Catalonia, is in a privileged position on the north eastern coast of the Iberian peninsular. It is unequivocally Mediterranean, not only in its geography, but also because of its history, tradition and cultural influences. Having thrown off the shackles of Franco’s dictatorship, the city has emerged as a sophisticated, stylish and dynamic metropolis with a wealth of art and stunning architecture. In particular, the prolific and unique work of Antoni Gaudi attracts visitors from all over the world.

Barcelona, however, respects its wealth of history and the medieval heart of the city with its narrow pedestrianised streets, offer an escape from the bustle of the modern city. Sights here include the beautiful 14th and 15th Century Catedral La Seu, Placa del Rei and the wonderful Picasso Museum, housed in a converted palace that offers a comprehensive collection of the artist’s early work.

Antoni Gaudi was born in Reus in 1852 and his daring architecture and designs, greatly influenced by forms of nature, have set the city of Barcelona apart from any other in Spain. The use of curved construction stones, twisted iron sculptures and organic-like forms characterise Gaudi’s Barcelona work. Many of his buildings are adorned by coloured tiles arranged in mosaic patterns and he added a further important dimension to his buildings, so often overlooked by architects - the use of colour. The combination of original design, with interesting shaped stonework and vibrant colours give the viewer a truly breathtaking visual experience.

Our visit includes a guided tour of the old city, Barri Gotic and the fascinating 19th Century Eixample district. Laid out in an ordered grid system, it is easy to get around and there is plenty to interest visitors. It is here that we will visit Gaudi’s extraordinary, iconic masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia. This is a truly magnificent and astounding building that dominated the latter part of Gaudi’s life and today it still remains unfinished.

No visit to Barcelona is complete without a stroll along Las Ramblas, a long, winding, pedestrianised, tree-lined street with flower stalls, street musicians bars, cafes, restaurants, news stands and caged birds. It is always busy, and particularly so in the evenings and weekends. However, this adds to the general bustling, yet relaxed atmosphere and it is a great place to meet friends and watch the world go by.

WORLD CLASS OPERA
Our tour departing on 25th May 2008 includes a performance of ‘DIE WALKUERE’ (The Valkyrie) at Barcelona’s Liceu Theatre, starring the inimitable Placido Domingo in one of his greatest roles. In Wagner’s opera the Valkyries are heroic women warriors who band together in a powerful sisterhood, retrieving the dead heroes slain in battle and carrying them to Valhalla. Tickets for the performance will be for 2nd category stalls seats.

North of Barcelona is the ‘serrated mountain’, Montserrat, which rises to 4,055 feet and is a stunning setting for Catalonia’s most holy place, the 9th Century Monastery of Montserrat. It is possible to book an optional excursion to visit the Monastery and your Tour Manager will give you details.

In the unlikely event of the total cancellation of the opera/recital due to ill health, adverse weather, or any other reason or change of cast, the ticket price will only be refunded if the entire performance is cancelled. Only the ticket price will be refunded under such circumstances and no reimbursement made for travel expenses such as flights, hotels, meals etc.
