CARNAC is one of the world's great prhistoric sights famous for its abundant megalithic stones. These are situated just north of the town and are aligned in rows in a field, their original purpose unknown. The nearby Musee de Prehistoire complements these fascinating relics with displays of collections dating back as far as 450,000BC.
ANNES was the capital of Brittany in the 16th century and is a busy, commercial city today with a well-preserved medieval quarter. Highlights here include the 16th century Places des Lices, Cathédrale St Pierre, dating from the 13th century and the interesting archaeological museum, housed in the 15th century Chateau Gaillard.
RENNES is a lively city and the capital of Brittany with plenty of restaurants and bars.
Having suffered from a devastating fire in 1720, Rennes is rich in well-preserved architecture with
many examples from the 16th century onwards. One of the oldest existing Parliament seats in
France, Rennes has enjoyed a prominent role in the history of Brittany seeing many armies beat its
walls including the Romans, English, Germans and Americans.
Sights here include: the Palais de Justice, Museé de Bretagne et des Beaux Arts, several typically Breton churches and an attractive old town lined with traditional half-timbered houses.
ANGERS is situated on the Maine River near its confluence with the Loire and the city dates back to early Roman times. After being badly damaged in the 2nd World War Angers has been well restored and has many beautiful sights and attractions. These include the 13th century castle and the 12th century Saint-Maurice Cathedral as well as museums and churches. Probably the most prominent attraction is the Château d’Angers.
