the FULL itinerary
All around Tunis you can see the ‘bread basket’ or ‘garden’ of Tunisia where the crops that make this one of the few self-sufficient countries in the world are grown. This fresh, mostly organic produce provides the ingredients for another very enjoyable aspect of this fascinating country – the food and drink!
TUNISIA is the smallest African nation, but has wielded great influence over the years. Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Spaniards, Ottomans and the French have all come and gone and left their mark in various ways.
You will visit the atmospheric MEDINA OF TUNIS, with its narrow lanes and covered souks; historic CARTHAGE, which dominated the western Mediterranean 2,500 years ago; the pretty village of SIDI BOU SAID, where many artists have found inspiration, and the ancient Punic Port of BIZERTE.
Spring normally brings mild, warm and mostly sunny weather in which blossom and flowers flourish, although you can get cold winds and showers from the north so layers of clothing are recommended.
On arrival in Tunis you will be transferred to the Sheraton Tunis Hotel and Towers**** for the duration of your stay and there will be welcome drinks and dinner at the hotel on your first night.
Your tour commences with a half day walking tour
of TUNIS MEDINA for a fascinating iinsight into the Tunisian way of life. The Medina is the historical and cultural heart of Tunis and on the World Heritage List. Your guide will take you through the narrow lanes and show you some of the oldest souks. A traditional Tunisian lunch in the Medina is included and there will be time for shopping.
Visit BARDO MUSEUM located in the suburbs of Tunis. Originallt a 13th Century Hafside Palace, it has been restored throughout the centuries to become this superb example of Arab-Moslem 17th/18th Century architecture and decoration, with vaulted ceilings and galleries. Priceless acquisitions from all parts of Tunisia are displayed by date and represent prehistoric, Cathaginian, Roman, Christian and Islamic eras. Continue to ancient CARTHAGE where many of the mosaics and statues were found; visit the nearby village of SIDI BOU SAID with its Tunisian blue doors and window grilles. Lunch is included.
A full day driving north, crossing the MEJERDE RIVER and fertile rolling hills, to the seaside town of BIZERTE with its Spanish fort, old port and massive Kasbah, in perfect shape despite its age of 400 years. The original structure dates back to Byzantine times.
